Destination Info

London
London is one of the most popular cities in the world. It’s home to charming pubs, world-class (and often free) museums, tons of history, some of the best theatre in the world, a diverse population, incredible food, and a wild nightlife. Take a walk in Trafalgar Square and admire he fountains and the famous monuments, such as the four bronze lion statues and Nelson’s Column. Lots of people hang out here so it makes for a good place to people watch.
Paris
It's no secret that Paris is one of the most romantic cities in Europe and one of the most visited cities in the world. So if you have an interrail pass, Paris is a MUST! There are endless reasons to visit Paris more than once, it is not only a beautiful and cultural city, it's very walkable and hosts great sights, and it has been a source of inspiration for many writers, artists, and filmmakers. As Audrey Hepburn famously said, 'Paris is always a good idea', and we couldn't agree more. From those bucket list attractions like the Eiffel Tower to picture-perfect pleasures like a picnic on the Champ de Mars, Paris really does offer something for everyone!
Barcelona
When you think of Barcelona, what do you think of? Do you think of Flamenco dancing and amazing food? If that’s all you think of, then you don’t know half the story. Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia, standing out from the rest of Spain with an amazing culture and pride of its own. Visit places with amazing architecture and take sightseeing to a completely new level in Barcelona.
Nice
Next up on your interrail route will be in the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera, Nice, which sits on the picturesque, pebbly shores of Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels). Situated at the foot of the Alps, Nice is the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast. During the day, take a walk along the Promenade des Anglais, which stretches over 2.5 miles. You will bump into all types of people, such as cyclists and skateboarders. Nice has everything you need for a great time on this leg of your interrailing adventure, stunning beaches, sensational bars and restaurants, amazing views, and wonderful culture.
Lake Como
Situated in Como (Province) in Lombardy, Lake Como is part of the Italian Lake District. It has been popular with visitors for many years for its combination of fresh air, water, mountains and good weather, it makes an excellent stop over in Italy. Lake Como is pretty characteristic. It has a kind of flair and sense of history that tends to impress its visitors in a sense deeper than only from a touristic point of view. It has been appreciated for its beauty and uniqueness for ages, and even as early as the Roman Times. Its atmosphere and natural surroundings have been the inspiration for an important part of the creation of Naboo, in the Star Wars movies!
Interlaken
Located in the beautiful Alps, Interlaken is a small town surrounded by towering mountains with a lake at each end (hence the name, which means “between lakes”). It’s a wonderful spot for mountain-related sports and the beautiful scenery and the number of pubs make it a popular backpacker destination in the summer. St Beatus Caves-The St Beatus caves are a network of caves and tunnels above Lake Thun. Legend has it that St Beatus took refuge in the caves in the 6th century and drove out the dragon that lived there.
Venice
Welcome to the ancient town built on a lagoon, Venice! This city has a collection of domes and spires rising out of the Adriatic Sea. Filled with life and stunning architecture. Venice is filled with bars, cafes, and restaurants where locals and travelers meet up to have a good time with food and a drink or two. This city built on water is famous for the beautiful gondola rides which take you back in time and allow you to appreciate the rich beauty of this city, an experience you will never forget!
Florence
Florence is one of the most charming cities in Italy, filled with a rich history, stunning architecture, and art. Florence may not be one of the first cities that comes to mind when you think of Italy, it’s one of the calmer cities to visit. Not a lot of people know that the fashion industry was born here. Homegrown fashion designer, Guccio Gucci (founder of the fashion house of Gucci), opened his first haute-couture boutique here in the 1920s. Shopping in the Tuscan capital has been stylish ever since! If you want to add an extra city to your train holiday, take a day trip from Florence to Pisa, where you can get that iconic picture of the Leaning Tower.
Rome
This stop on your interrail route involves living your best life in the cosmopolitan capital of Italy. Rome undoubtedly has some of the best spots to visit due to the vast amount of world-renowned art collections, rich cultural heritage, and numerous archaeological treasures. Granted you may be looking for something off the beaten track on your trip? Fear not, as it’s a given that Rome will provide you with these types of experiences. So certainly lap up the dolce vita lifestyle. Idle around those picturesque streets coupled with taking a pitstop at those street-side cafes, as this is what Rome is all about!
Sorrento
Sorrento features beautiful architecture, many cafes and restaurants, and shops catering to tourists. it is an ideal base for visiting Pompeii and Ercolano. Ferries regularly commute between Sorrento and Capri, making Sorrento an ideal base for exploring that island as well. A trip to Sorrento is full of possibilities, enjoy a splash in the Naples Bay, a walk through the lively pedestrian only streets at night, or an enjoyable day exploring the ruins of Pompeii. You can catch a bus that takes you on a spectacular but hair raising drive through the Amalfi Coast. You will pass through villages built along the cliffs that have some of the most beautiful churches and architecture in the area.
Split
Split lies on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. Spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings, Split’s greater area includes the neighbouring seaside towns as well. The city is a popular destination for tourists and has transport links to numerous Adriatic islands and the Apennine Peninsula. From a stopover place for tourists catching a ferry to nearby islands, or a bus to another, more exciting tourist destination, Split has become one of the most popular places to visit in Croatia. Located in the middle of the Dalmatian Coast, Split makes a great base on your tour of Croatia. It is also an important transport hub and a port city.
Ljubljana
Visit Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital city is the hidden gem of Europe on this train holiday, an interrailing favourite! A city renowned for green space, beautiful bridges, and buildings. As well as dozens of different urban design elements such as lamposts, pillars, and pyramids. This makes the city even more visually appealing! While you're here, you NEED to visit Lake Bled! This is definitely one of the most spellbinding places in Slovenia, if not Europe. This incredibly scenic lake near the Alps looks too good to be real! With the island church, clifftop castle, and mountain backdrop, you're sure to find more than enough to keep you entertained here!
Budapest
Budapest is a city that still bears the scars of communism but one that is constantly developing into one of the world’s greatest capitals. Split in two by the grand River Danube, on one side you have the Buda, the hilly side dominated by the castle and Royal Palace. They call Budapest the Paris of the east. When walking the streets you will be able to tell that Budapest is a dynamic and living city. It has so much architecture and boulevards you wouldn’t know where to look.
Bratislava
Bratislava is the small capital city of Slovakia and is by far one of the most underrated cities you will ever visit. The city benefits from a fantastic location in central Europe, which means you can easily access it on a day trip from a few different cities such as Vienna, Budapest, and Prague! The charming little city boasts amazing architecture and rich history. Here are a few reasons why you should consider adding a visit to Bratislava to your bucket list!
Vienna
Vienna is a city full of surprises. For every breath-taking building you expect to see, there are another two beside it that you don’t. Due to its passionate relationship with classical music grand theatres and ornate opera houses adorn the city centre, but it is also a city bursting with bars and clubs that would feel at home in the hippest of cities. And while it was the seat of the Habsburg Dynasty for so many years, you can live like a king here without upsetting your bank balance.
Krakow
While the rest of the country was being blasted during WWII, Krakow emerged from the war largely unscathed. As a result the city is now home to a unique mix of the old and the new that you won’t find in any other Polish city. Kraków’s postcard-perfect old town comes complete with Europe’s largest medieval market square and even a fairy-tale castle overlooking the river. Architecturally it can easily match any European city arch for arch, spire for spire, monument for monument, gargoyle for gargoyle.
Prague
It's no secret that Prague is one of Europe's most magical, affordable and beautiful cities, a perfect addition to any interrail route. The 'City of a Thousand Spires' is an architectural gem, the city has been an important UNESCO World Heritage Site which attracts more and more tourists every year! The narrow streets open up onto fantastic squares which host to medieval-looking homes and historical buildings for you to explore! Start in the centre of the Old Town, home to the major sights and has been the city's main marketplace for a millennium.
Berlin
Berlin is a city often compared to New York, as it never sleeps! The locals here are known as the lotus-eaters of Germany as they love nothing more than a good time. Don't let this put you off! As this city is pulsating with museums, tasty beer, and an unimaginable history! It's safe to say that Berlin is a city loved by those who use an interrail pass. Remember that history will greet you at every corner, as Berlin once staged a revolution, headquartered by Nazis, bombed to bits, divided in two and then finally reunited.
Copenhagen
Split by lakes and surrounded by sea, an energetic and hip waterside vibe permeates Copenhagen (København), one of Europe’s most user-friendly (and trendy) capitals. It’s a welcoming, compact city with a centre largely given over to pedestrians (and cyclists). There’s an emphasis on café culture and top-notch museums by day, and a thumping live music, bar and club scene by night. Festivals like Distortion (June) and the Jazz Festival (July) show the city off at its coolest and most inventive.
Hamburg
In any other city, repeatedly seeing a skull and crossbones flag flying might be a little intimidating. But in Hamburg, it’s a symbol of the good fight. The city’s St Pauli football club unites a social movement under the rather piratey emblem, which seems to finds its way onto every banner, T-shirt and window sticker in town.
Amsterdam
The last stop on your interrail route around Europe's glorious cities is Amsterdam, often referred to as 'Venice of the North'. The capital of the Netherlands is a city on everyone's bucket list, and I think it's safe to say you need to visit the Dam at least once in your life! From unconventional restaurants, local craft beers to world-class museums, it's easy to see why it's at the top of everyone's list. Don't forget that this city has more bicycles than people, therefore the only way to explore is in true Netherlands style!
Bruges
The Belgian city of Bruges is often referred to as the ‘Venice of Belgium’, visit a charming and antique town that has preserved its medieval charm of centuries past. Ever since Colin Farrel was filmed running around the streets in the black comedy motion picture, In Bruges, tourists cannot get enough of the city! Bruges is dominated by churches, museums and looks like something that has been lifted straight from the pages of a fairytale. The city centre is a UNESCO cultural heritage, with masterpieces all around town and a constant vibrant atmosphere. Find out more about the city of Bruges, which is enough to convince you to visit the city at least once in your life!
